John Abrami: Head Coach

I began my coaching career in 1978 coaching
the Miramonte Swim Team in Orinda, California. I coached the team four summers while I was in College at the University of
California at Santa Barbara. The highlight was an Orinda/Moraga Pool Association championship. The first and only time Miramonte
won the championship.
After graduation I was involved in politics working with
then Assembly Speaker Willie Brown and now State Superintendent of Public Instruction Jack O’Connell. I also spent time
working for the political action committee headed by Cesar Chavez.
I returned
to coaching in 1984. I coached with Lamornida Aquatics, now The Terrapin Swim Team and the Walnut Creek Masters Swim Team.
At Lamornida Aquatics I worked with numerous Top 16, Junior National and Senior National swimmers. We also won a Masters National
Championship in 1987. I took a break from coaching in 1988 to seek treatment for Cancer.
In 1989 I moved to Clearwater Florida and began coaching the Clearwater YMCA Gators. The Clearwater YMCA was a Top Ten team
in Florida Swimming. I coached the team’s first Junior National and Top 16 Swimmer.
In 1991 I moved to Connecticut to coach Waves Central Connecticut Aquatics. At Waves I coached the team’s first
National top 16, National Age Champion and Junior National swimmers. The Team won the LSC championship and I was named the
Coach of the Year in 1998. In 2000, I started coaching the Westport YMCA Swim Team, a perennial Top 10 team at YMCA Nationals.
At Westport I worked with several Junior National, US Open, Senior National and Olympic Trials swimmers. While in Connecticut,
I was elected twice to the Connecticut Swimming Board of Directors by my fellow coaches.
I finally tired of the Long Island Sound and the New England winters so in the summer of 2002, I returned to California
to coach the Escondido Swim Club. Although I am old, I still like to train. In addition
to being fun, I believe that it makes me a better coach. I race with the King’s Seafood Triathlon Team and the Carlsbad
Masters Swim Team. When I am not training or coaching I like to go to the beach (even though I am a lousy surfer), eat pizza
at Pizza Port in Solana Beach, listen to Jack Johnson and read the New Republic.
